Like A Sponge

It's funny, when your older. And in my case, it's easy to take simple things for granted. As you may have read in previous blogs, my wife and I have been getting my two children into musicals.

We watched "West Side Story" and couple of weeks ago, and I commented that both my children enjoyed it. What surprised myself, that some two weeks on, my lads have been singing songs from "West Side Story" around the house, we have had the finger clicking to the "When Your A Jet..."

Last week we showed them "Hairspray", my word...they loved it!, my youngest son has played it over and over....."Good Morning Baltimore!"
This leads me to last Sunday, we watched a normal kids based filmed, Walt Disneys "John Carter", fifthteen minutes in, my youngest says "When are they going to Sing!! lol.

It's really made me realise that, kids minds are like sponges, and it's easy to take these small things for granted. The good news, I have plenty of musicals up my sleeve for them, up next is another monster hit "Grease".

I recently had a weeks break from MW TA listening, for my own sanity really, but you will be pleased to know, I am back on the horse now. Like all hobbies, I find you need to step back from time to time.
I also found this out when I used to play the drums, something I haven't mentioned before in my blog. I used to play the drums for 20 years, based around Newport.
It's something I do miss, however I reached a point in my life when my family were more important to me, and sadly moving to a different part of Wales,  travelling up and down the M4 corridor just to practice and not giging enough, resulted in me leaving my long time band "The Rob Flectcher Band"

I did try to few adverts for bands, but nothing ever came about, so in the end the drums and cymbals were sold off to pay some outstanding bills. At the time, I know some of my mates couldn't quite believe it, but life moves on, and I have had some fantastic memories of great gigs, and helping with song writing and producing  the band demo's (Thats for another day)

For a change today, I'm going to be the star! Todays music/video is a live video of myself on the drums over ten years ago at Bristol, with a track called  "Who's to Blame"

Well, I hope it wasn't to painful if you decided to take a listen!

Before I sign off here is this months MW TA logs for March 2012

Lazy Weekend

Well it seems it's all quiet, here at Read Towers, we didn't have the usual routine of helping the kids with the homework, as it's half term. And we have also been enjoying the sunshine....yes remember that word :)
My football side Newport County won 3-1 away Vs Woking..happy days!
I have been getting to listen to lots of music, Steve Vai latest CD is really good,I have only played it once, but it's pretty good.
Went to Sainburys in Kidderminster today, we ended up going to the cafe upstairs. Not bad food, I had a Beef Lasagne (Not Horse),chips and Garlic Bread, Latte and a slice of Coffee and Walnut cake, not the best meal ever, but certainly better than a McDonalds!

Once we arrived home, did a bit more house work, washing up and hoovering, then settled down with the family to watch the rest of "West Side Story" on Blu ray. I couldn't beleive that the film is 52 years old!, and the story of Racism is just the same, even now, although things are not as bad as they where. Although it's a bit dated,my kids enjoyed it, with my oldest saying he found it moving and emotional. I can't wait for him to see 1973 version "Jesus Christ Superstar", it's due to be released on Blu ray soon, and I for one can't wait, it's my all time favourite musicial.

So until JCS turns up, it is back to normal films with the kids, Real Steel will be next.

The Radio front has been up and down on MW, I managed a few new ones,  1320Khz WLQY Hollywood,FL is one that springs to mind.

Tried to get my Climax DTV300 run via SDR software, didn't have any sucess. I will have to probably ask someone for help,or just sit on it for a bit. The good news is the Climax is working, I had a quick play with the bundled software and tested the DAB and FM, so it works, but the software is plain awful.

Ok, thats all for now, I will leave you with a Video from one of my favourite country bands at the moment. They are called the Small Town Pistols and are Canadian based, they where part of "The Wilkinsons", anyway they have a new CD out next week, and they never get plugged in the UK, so have a listen, Amanda Wilkinson has an amazing voice, and she is the real deal live! This track is called "Colour Blind" Enjoy!

Wreck It Ralph

So..my wife and I and children went to the movies yesterday to watch Disney's latest offering,"Wreck It Ralph".
I really didn't know what to expect, as the film is the childrens Pixar type of movie. I must confess, I really enjoyed it, it's a bit of a mad concept, but in a nutshell, the film is based in a Games Arcade, where there are old games machines and modern ones. Wreck it Ralph lives in the retro machine, and isn't happy with his character, so he leaves his game console, and defects to a different one.
I will stop at this point, as you probably get the idea, and I won't want to spoil it for you, anyway if you have kids, go check it out, at least the story line is original.

I also visted "Rebens" in Food Hall in Merry Hill, I had my usual "Chilli Chicken Noodies", and I also had there "Chilli Chicken Curry"......WHAT MAN!! This food should come with a warning, tastes fantastic, but blows your head off, I started to feel like "Adam Richmond" from "Man Vs Food" at one point, still I can report that Man won!

The TA MW conditions are still pretty good, with a few of the East Coast Stations showing back up at around 01.00UTC last night, by 03.00UTC they had become quite weak.

I promised a track from the New Martha Wainwright CD "Come Home To Mama", today I offer you a track called "Radio Star", been  warned it's a strange and arty video!

Fish Pie

My wife made a superb Fish Pie tonight, top notch stuff, too good for the Captain's Table!
So what's been happening? Well, the radio front is still pretty good on MW, I have only just catched up on three days worth of overnight recordings, with 2 out of  3 giving me some more 1st timers.

Managed to have a quick listen to "Newport City Radio", to my football team I support, Newport County. We drew 2-2 against Tamworth today, and still near the top, we have just got to stop leaking goals, the top of the Blue Square Premier (Old Confrence) is so tight on points, any of the top 7 teams are within winning distance, and thats the problem with this league, every side is capable of beating the other side, with no side running away with the league, still at least it keeps it exciting!

We plan to go to the Odeon Cinema tomorrow, in what the locals call "Merry Hell" due to how packed out it can become, I will let you know I we all get on. No doubt I will be having some legendary "Chilli Chicken Noodles" from the food hall.

OK, I guess it's nearly bedtime, as it's 1'o clock in the morning! I have had the New Paul Gilbert CD on this week it's called Vibrato. Trying to find a nice live performance of Paul is a bit of a task on You Tube, as they mostly sound too loud and distorted, very bootleg like quality. However I have managed to find a link of a superb Instrumental Track called "Fuzz Guitar". If you haven't heard of Paul Gilbert, he is probably one of the best hard rock guitarist out there, and up with the legends of Vai,Satrani, and in my view Eddie Van Halen.

Now for my last track....Another Guitarist, named "Jan Cyrka", he used to be in a Heavy Metal band named "Zodiac Mindwarp" during the late 1980's, but he is more famous now for writing TV theme tunes...Honestly, he even wrote the them for the "Jeremy Kyle Show" ! Hey, but don't let put you off, Jan is a truely amazing player, with an fantastic tone, and feeling in his playing. The track I bring you is from Jan's second solo album  "Sprit", it called "Brief Encounter", watch Jan play it live on his You Tube channel, I may also add this is probably one of my all time favourite guitar tracks...Enjoy!

Will catch you all soon

Not Enough Time

Yes Folks, life seems to be running at 200Mph at the moment, however as promised here is a small update.
We finally had a hot oven meal tonight, Yes... the cooker is working. The repair man came around a 7.30am this morning, and to my amazement, the cooker wouldn't trip the electrics! Although this could happen again, at least I now know a work around to get it working again.
So tonight's tea was oven chips, lightly dusted Cod, and Pasta and Sauce.

The blog has taken a bit of a backseat, due the ever improving Medium Wave Conditions, my USA logs are starting to look pretty good.  My Climax DTV300 USB Dongle has turned up, I haven't even had a chance to plug it in yet!

Talking of Blogs, I have added some links to the Blogs I read  go check them out, hopefully someone in Blogland will add myself? I also plan to add a few of my favourite websites soon.

Ok, before I sign off, here is a promised track from one of my favorite albums of 2012 by "Rufus Wainwright" called "Out Of the Game", taken from the album with the same name. I thought you could capture Rufus Live, although official video for this song has Helena Bonham Carter in it, so I have added that as well.

Enjoy and Catch you again soon (Promise!)

Take Away Challenge

Something I forgot to mention on my last blog, is we are currently on day 3 of having no electric cooker!
On Thursday night, just towards me finishing off our evening tea (Yellow Thai Curry and Noodles), the cooker tripped the main trip switches, and won't turn back on without tripping out again!

So it was Take Away on Friday (Chicken Sagwala), Take Away on Saturday (Pizza) and thankfully no takeaway today, although we did finish last nights Pizza off for dinner.
Not all has been lost, my wife dusted off our Toastie Maker tonight, and I had a cracking toastie, with Chesse, Tomatoes,Ham and Chilli and Lime Chicken Bits.....It was quality, I hope the cooker is repaired soon.

We watched a good old fashioned black and white movie this afternoon staring the actress Joan Crawford in the 1946 movie called "Humoresque",it also stars John Garfield. We really enjoyed the movie, and to be honest the first hour was gripping, but we found that the last third of the movie went a bit sticky sweet hollywood, certainly it would make a great contender for a remake.
If you haven't seen the film, here is a quick 2 minute music montage, the playing of the piano and volin is of the highest standard.

Now, here are last night DX's logs

1630    07.00   WRDW, Augusta, GA ID on the hour just before news                                   111   03/02 DER

1680    06.01   WOKB, Winter Gardens, ID on the hour                                                       222   03/02 DER

As usual I will close with a bit of music, hear is a live video via You Tube of a Scotish Folk Band named "Box Club", I discovered them on BBC Alba, there album, was one of my Christmas Present from Santa. I don't even know if the band are still going? But the video really does capture the band rocking out, excellent musicianship, I only discovered the video this morning, so I hope you enjoy it.

Back to work tomorrow, I hope to feature something from Martha Wainwrights new album, and if I remember, a track from one of my favourite CD's of 2012 by Rufus Wainwright, and as you would expect, the normal random going on's in my world.

Black Swan

With nothing on the TV tonight, my wife and I decided to watch a film we had wanted to watch for quite some time, and what a great film it turned out to be.
Of course if you are a regular cinema visitor, you would have heard all about the "Black Swan", personally I thought it was fantastic, certainly it's one to turn the volume up, and jump into the world of ballet dancing. Here is a very small 47 second clip via You Tube, I was lucky purchase this on Blu ray for a crazy £4.00p at my local blockbuster.

Back on the radio front now, I thought I would mention some of the equipment I currently use for my DX hobby. My main reciever is a Win Radio G33DCC SDR radio, on the antenna front, I now use a Wellbrook FLG100LN-1 Flag thats 4m x 10m at 280 degrees, and also a Wellbrook ALA100M on a rotator. These are both run together into a Quantum Phaser, and to be honest is the reason I get some much TA DX even in the center on the United Kingdom. If it wasn't for the Quantum Phaser, I wouldn't get even a sniff at some DX, this is simply because I am 4 miles from the power house TX at Droitwich, and it slams out  1.4 mega watts over 4 frequecies, I can even see the TX from my QTH!! And if that wasn't enough I also have the local MW BBC TX's to cope with....am I starting to rant!

I also have a Degen DE1103 portable, which get's used on holidays. And currently I don't a proper Band 2 set up, although I have the equipment. Being that we are living in a rented house, and will be for another 2 years, I have decided not to put up my Blake FM8 beam.

Last year, I sold off a shed load of FM Tuners, Sony XDRF1HD,Hitachi FT5500MK2, and plenty more.
After down sizing, I'm left with the Sony XDR-S10HDiP, which I plan to have modifed at some stage (change it to 12volt operation, get a headphone and audio outs fitted), slightly off subject, I found the
XDR-S10HDiP to slightly out perform the XDRF1HD in the RDS department, RDS ID's would be displayed faster,  on weaker stations than the XDRF1HD, although radio reception is the same.

Last year I purchase a couple of Blaupunkt Car Radios after good reports on SkywavesFM, these are up with the Sony for DX,so I have kept them.

Which leaves up nicely on to this years lastest thing, the Climax DTV300 USB TV dongle. having heard good reports via John Faulkner Blog, I have ordered one up, you can get them on Amazon for £12.99p plus a bit of P&P, could this end up being the DX bargain of the century? I certainly look forward to posting my views here, and possibly a review in BDXC Communcation.

OK, before I sign off tonight,I will leave you with a track by the Candian Instrutmental Band named "Bela Fleck And The Flecktones", I used to love these during the late 90's, amazing musicanship really, and I dug out there "UFO TOFU" album this afternoon, I'd forgotten, how good they really are...Anyway, the You Tube is taken from a live gig, it's called the "Sinister Minister" from the album there 1st self titled album,"Bela Fleck And The Flecktones, if you want to open up your musical horizons, then look no further.

Ok, just a quick one tonight, many thanks the Skywave's John and Paul for ID the mystery american signal on 1680Khz. It was KRJO from Monroe, LA, apparantly this is the only US MW to cover Bloomberg News on 1680Khz, so another 1st catch for myself.
